Link in bio
Instagram link not clickable? Where the link was added decides it
A web address is only tappable in a few places on Instagram. Check where the link was added, which app version you use and how you are testing it.
If an Instagram link shows as plain text, it was most likely typed into the bio text, a caption or a comment. Instagram only turns addresses into links in specific places, such as the Links section of your profile and a Story link sticker. Move the address to Edit profile → Links, save it, then test from another account.
Start with where the address was added
Most untappable links are in the wrong field. The bio is two separate things in the profile editor: a free-text description, and a Links section. Only the second one produces something visitors can tap.
| Where the address is | Tappable? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bio text (the description under your name) | No, it stays text | Add the address under Links instead. |
| Edit profile → Links | Yes, once saved | Check the saved address and test as a visitor. |
| Story link sticker | Yes | Use the Link sticker; an address typed onto the Story as text is not a link. |
| Feed caption or comment | Not on ordinary posts | Point to your profile links. Meta describes clickable post and Reel links as a paid Meta One feature. |
Move the address into the Links section
- 1
Open Edit profile in the app
Go to your profile in the Instagram app and tap Edit profile.
- 2
Tap Links, then add a link
Many guides call the button Add external link; Meta's own help pages say Add link. Use whichever your screen shows. If you only see a single Website field, your app is probably out of date (see below).
- 3
Paste the full address and give it a title
Paste the complete address of the page, for example
https://openout.app/yourname. After pasting, check for a leading space or a doubledhttps://. The title should say what opens, such as Shop or Book a call. - 4
Decide what to do with the typed copy
Once the link is in Links, an address still sitting in the bio text is a duplicate visitors can't tap. Remove it, or keep it only if you want the address readable for people who type it.
- 5
Save and leave the editor
Tap Done or the checkmark, then go back to your profile. Links in the editor are form fields; they only behave like links on the profile itself.
Update the app if Links is missing
Instagram started letting all accounts add up to five profile links in April 2023, TechCrunch reported. An app that hasn't been updated can show an older profile editor. Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, close it fully and look again.
Several guides also report that the Links section is managed in the mobile app rather than on instagram.com. If you're editing on a computer and can't find it, try the phone app before assuming the feature is unavailable to you.
Test as a visitor, not from your own editor
Testing your own profile can mislead you in two ways. Inside Edit profile, links are fields to edit, not links to tap. And with more than one link, guides describe the profile showing the first link with a note that more exist; visitors tap it to see the full list. One visible link name can therefore be normal, not a bug.
- Use a second account or a friend's phone. Open your profile as they see it and tap each link.
- Check the order. The first link in the Links section is the one people see before tapping, so put the current priority there.
- Check Account Status. Instagram's Account Status page lists features you currently can't use. It's worth a look if a link feature behaves differently from what guides describe.
Why links in captions and comments stay text
On ordinary posts, typing an address into a caption or comment doesn't make it tappable, which is why so many captions say link in bio. There is one documented exception. Meta's help page on adding links to posts and reels with Meta One describes clickable post and Reel links for eligible public accounts on certain paid plans, with a monthly allowance. Those links are added through an Add link control before sharing, not by typing the address into the caption, and the page says they can't be edited after sharing.
Without that subscription, the practical route is unchanged: put the destination in your Links section and mention it in the caption. For a Story, use the Link sticker, which Instagram opened to all accounts in October 2021 (TechCrunch). The Instagram link sticker guide covers adding, changing and tracking one.
It's tappable now, but something else is wrong
| Symptom | Where to look |
|---|---|
| The link disappears after saving | Instagram may have refused the address. Look for a message and record its exact wording. |
| A warning says the link isn't allowed | A platform decision about the address. Use the review options the warning or Account Status offers; don't swap domains to get past it. |
| A tap opens the wrong or a blank page | Open the saved address in a normal browser and compare the final URL, including redirects. |
| The page opens, but sign-in or checkout fails | The page is running in Instagram's in-app browser. Compare the same step in Safari or Chrome. |
For the in-app browser case, how to open Instagram links in Safari or Chrome covers the visitor's manual route.
If your bio link points to a link page
A link page doesn't make a link tappable; the Instagram field does that. What it can do is hold more destinations behind the one link visitors see first, and keep them the same across platforms. OpenOut's Free plan covers 1 page with up to 3 links. Pro removes the link limit and adds browser guidance for visitors arriving in an in-app browser: by default an opening attempt on Android and a guided copy flow on iPhone. Neither is guaranteed to reach Safari or Chrome. See what a link in bio page should do and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the link in my Instagram bio not clickable?
Usually because the address was typed into the bio text. On your profile, only links under Edit profile → Links are tappable; in a Story, use the link sticker. Move the address there, save it and test from another account.
Why can't I click links in Instagram captions or comments?
Addresses typed into captions and comments stay plain text on ordinary posts. Meta describes clickable post and Reel links as a feature of certain paid Meta One plans, added with an Add link control before sharing.
Why does only one of my Instagram links show on my profile?
With several links, guides describe the profile showing the first one with a note that more exist; visitors tap it to see the rest. The order in your Links section decides which one appears first.
I can't find Links in Edit profile. What should I do?
Update the Instagram app and check again on your phone, since an older version can show a different editor. If it is still missing, look at Account Status, which lists features you currently can't use.
