How to open Instagram links in Safari or Chrome
Instagram renders every tapped link in its own browser. Here is how to get the same page into Safari or Chrome, including what to do when the menu entry isn't there.
Instagram opens links in a browser it controls. Bio links, story link stickers, DMs and shopping tags all land in the same webview, where you are signed out of sites you're signed into, your password manager can't autofill, and Apple Pay is often simply absent.
Getting out takes two taps when the app cooperates, and a copy-paste when it doesn't. Both are below.
On iPhone
- 1
Tap the three dots
Top-right corner of the Instagram browser view, next to the close button.
- 2
Choose "Open in external browser"
Depending on your app version this may read "Open in browser" or "Open in Safari". It opens the same URL in whichever browser you've set as your iOS default.
- 3
If the entry isn't there, tap "Copy link"
Then open Safari, long-press the address bar and choose Paste and Go. This works on every version, because it doesn't rely on Instagram exposing anything.
On Android
- 1
Open the menu
Three dots, usually top-right. On some builds it sits at the bottom of the view instead.
- 2
Choose "Open in Chrome" or "Open in browser"
Android's intent system makes this hand-off more reliable than the iOS equivalent — when the entry is present, it generally works.
- 3
Otherwise, copy and paste
Same fallback as on iPhone: "Copy link", open Chrome, paste into the address bar.
Where the link came from changes the menu
| Link placement | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Profile bio link | Standard webview with the full menu. The easiest case. |
| Story link sticker | Same webview, but the swipe-down gesture closes it — use the menu, not the gesture. |
| DM | Opens in the webview from inside the conversation; the menu is present but sometimes slower to appear. |
| Shopping / product tag | May route into Instagram's commerce surface rather than a plain webview, in which case there is no browser entry at all — copy the link instead. |
If you can't find any menu at all
Two reliable fallbacks, in order of how little they depend on the app:
- 1Long-press the link before tapping it. From a bio or a DM this often produces the system share sheet, which includes an "Open in Safari" or "Open in Chrome" option — bypassing the webview entirely rather than escaping it afterwards.
- 2Type the address by hand. Ugly, but for a short bio URL it takes seconds and cannot fail.
The general pattern behind all of this — including why apps do it and which other apps behave the same way — is in why do links open in the app instead of my browser.
If it's your link that keeps landing in the webview
Then none of the above is a solution, because it asks your visitor to do the work. Realistically most won't: they'll hit a checkout without a wallet button, or a login that doesn't recognise them, and close the tab. Your analytics will record an ordinary non-converting visit and tell you nothing about the cause.
What can be done from your side is detecting the context before the page renders, attempting whatever hand-off the platform genuinely supports, and turning the manual escape into a single tap. That is what the Instagram in-app browser page covers in detail.
What cannot be done — by anyone — is guaranteeing that Safari opens. iOS exposes no supported mechanism for a webview to push a URL into the system browser. Treat any product claiming otherwise with suspicion.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open an Instagram link in Safari?
Tap the three dots in the top-right of Instagram's browser view and choose "Open in external browser". If that entry isn't present, tap "Copy link" instead, then open Safari, long-press the address bar and choose Paste and Go.
Why does Instagram open links in its own browser?
Retention. Sending you to Safari is an app switch you might not return from, while a webview keeps you one tap from the feed. It is a deliberate product decision, and it applies to bio links, story stickers and DMs alike.
Can I make Instagram always open links in Chrome?
Not reliably. Some Android builds honour an external-browser preference, but there is no Instagram setting on iOS that disables the webview. Choosing a default browser in iOS Settings only affects which browser opens once Instagram decides to hand the link over.
Why am I logged out of websites inside Instagram's browser?
The webview keeps its own cookie storage, separate from Safari or Chrome. Your login session lives in your real browser, so the webview genuinely doesn't recognise you — and because extensions don't run there, your password manager can't sign you back in.
Does the swipe-down gesture close the story link browser properly?
It closes the view and discards the page. If you want to keep reading, use the menu to move the link to a real browser first — otherwise you'll have to find the story again to get back to it.
