In-app browsers
How to open Threads links in your browser
Links in Threads posts are tappable, and they usually open inside the app. How to continue in Safari or Chrome, what isn't documented, and what creators should check.
To open a Threads link in your browser, let the page load inside Threads, then check its menu, often three dots, for an option such as Open in browser. If there isn't one, copy the website's address into Safari or Chrome. We found no Meta documentation of a setting that sends every link to your browser.
Where you'll find links on Threads
Threads is more link-friendly than Instagram's feed: Meta's launch announcement said posts can include links, and they show up in the post itself rather than only in a profile. That means more places to test.
| Where the link is | What to know |
|---|---|
| In a post or reply | Tapping it usually opens the website inside Threads. This is the most common case. |
| In someone's profile | Threads lets profiles show up to five links, TechCrunch reported in May 2025. |
| In a message | Meta added messaging to Threads in July 2025. Test a link from a conversation separately; don't assume it behaves like a post. |
| A link to a Threads post | This is an address on threads.com. On a phone it may open the Threads app, not a website. |
Move a page from Threads to your browser
- 1
Let the page load
Tap the link in the post. The website opens inside Threads, with the app's own controls around it.
- 2
Check the page menu
Users describe a three-dot menu on the opened page with an option to open it in an external browser. Its wording and position aren't fixed; look for Open in browser, a browser name or a Share option.
- 3
Otherwise, copy the website address
Use a copy action in that menu if there is one. Make sure it is the website's address, not the Threads post's.
- 4
Paste it into your browser
Open Safari, Chrome or another installed browser, paste the address and load it. Then retry the step you came for, such as signing in or checking out.
Why a copied link can send you back to Threads
Copying a link from a post's share options gives you the address of the Threads post (Instagram Help Center), not the website it links to. Paste that into a browser on your phone and you may land back in the Threads app, because threads.com addresses belong to Threads. If you want the website, copy it from the opened page, or read it from the link text in the post and type it.
iPhone and Android
- iPhone: choosing a default browser in iOS settings decides what opens when an app hands a link over. It doesn't stop Threads from showing the page in its own view first, so the menu and copy steps are what you'll use.
- Android: an external link normally opens in the browser Android has set as the default. Some guides also suggest sharing the link from the in-app page to your browser app through Android's share sheet when there is no browser option in the menu.
An open-source test project, inapp-debugger, lists Threads among the apps that open links in an in-app view on iOS. It doesn't date its findings, so treat it as one data point.
Is there a setting to turn the in-app browser off?
Not one we could source. Threads users have publicly asked for an option to open links in an external browser, and Meta's documentation we found doesn't describe one. If a later version adds it, it will most likely sit in Threads' own settings, which are separate from Instagram's even though the two apps share an account. Don't apply an Instagram setting and expect Threads to follow it.
On a computer, this mostly doesn't apply
If you use Threads in a desktop browser, links open in that browser like on any other website. Meta moved the web version from threads.net to threads.com in 2025, according to its web features announcement.
For creators: test posts and profile links separately
TechCrunch's report on Threads profile links describes click insights for those links. A click count tells you a link was tapped, not that a visitor completed a sign-up or purchase in the in-app view. Test a link in a post and the same link in your profile on both iPhone and Android, and record which step, if any, fails.
OpenOut's detector recognises the Threads in-app browser with its own rule, checked before the Facebook rule, because a Meta app's browser can carry the same markers as Facebook's. On Pro and Agency, once you switch it on, browser guidance shows before your page: by default an opening attempt on Android and a guided copy flow on iPhone. Neither is guaranteed to reach the browser, so copy and manual steps stay available. The supported apps list has the full set, and pricing the plan details.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make Threads always open links in Safari or Chrome?
We couldn't find a documented setting for that. Use the opened page's menu for each link, or copy the website address into your browser. Check Threads' own settings in case a later version adds one.
Why do Threads links open inside the app?
Like Instagram and Facebook, Threads usually shows websites in its own browser view rather than handing them to Safari or Chrome. A default-browser preference on your phone doesn't change that first step.
How many links can I add to my Threads profile?
TechCrunch reported in May 2025 that Threads lets profiles show up to five links, with click insights for creators. Check your profile editor for the current limit.
Why does a copied Threads link open the Threads app?
Copying a link from a post's share options gives you the address of the Threads post, not the website it links to. Copy the website address from the opened page instead.
