Link in bio
The Instagram link in bio guide
Instagram now gives you more link slots than the old "one link in bio" rule suggested — and quietly undermines all of them with its in-app browser. Here is how to work with both facts.
"Link in bio" became a phrase because Instagram, for most of its life, allowed exactly one clickable URL per profile. That constraint created an entire product category. It has since loosened — but not in the way most people assume, and not in a way that removes the underlying problem.
Where links are actually allowed
There are four surfaces worth knowing about, and they are not equivalent:
- Profile bio links. The website field on your profile now accepts several links rather than one. They stack under your bio, and only the first is shown prominently — the rest sit behind a "and N more" tap.
- Stories. The link sticker works for all accounts. It is the highest-intent placement you have, because the viewer is already watching something specific.
- DMs. Links sent in a direct message are clickable and, in practice, tapped at a high rate. They do not scale, but for high-value conversions they are the most reliable path.
- Captions. Still not clickable. Writing a URL in a caption asks the reader to memorise and retype it — the conversion rate is close to zero.
The part nobody mentions: Instagram's in-app browser
Every one of those links opens inside Instagram's own browser, not Safari or Chrome. That webview does not share your visitor's logins, does not run their password manager, and frequently has no Apple Pay or Google Pay available.
The consequence is specific and expensive. If your bio link points at a shop, a course checkout, a booking form, a newsletter double opt-in or a subscription page, a meaningful share of the people who tap it will hit a step that quietly does not work. They will not report a bug. They will swipe back to the feed.
The full mechanics are in in-app browsers, explained, and the Instagram-specific behaviour is on the Instagram in-app browser page.
How to structure a bio link page that converts
The instinct is to list everything you have. That is the single most common mistake, because a bio link page is not a sitemap — it is a decision point with about three seconds of attention behind it.
- 1
Lead with one primary action
Whatever you most want to happen — the drop, the booking, the signup — goes first and looks different from everything else. One visually dominant button, not five equal ones.
- 2
Keep the total under six links
Every additional option reduces the odds of any single one being chosen. Six is a practical ceiling; four is usually better.
- 3
Make each label a promise, not a noun
"Shop" describes a page. "Get 20% off the new drop" describes an outcome. The second one is clicked far more often.
- 4
Match the page to the post that sent them
If your story is about one product, the page they land on should open with that product. A generic hub after a specific hook loses people.
- 5
Handle the in-app browser explicitly
Detect it, tell the visitor what is happening, and offer a route into their real browser before they hit the step that would have failed.
What to measure
Instagram gives you taps on the profile link and not much else. To know whether the page works you need your own numbers:
- Page views vs. link clicks. The ratio tells you whether the page itself is doing its job.
- Click distribution. If one link takes 80% of clicks, the other five are costing you attention for nothing.
- In-app vs. external sessions. How many visitors made it into a real browser — this is the number that predicts conversions downstream.
- Story traffic vs. profile traffic. They convert very differently and deserve different landing experiences.
We go deeper on which of these are worth acting on in the link-in-bio metrics that actually matter.
Frequently asked questions
How many links can you put in an Instagram bio?
Instagram allows several links in the profile website field, but only the first is displayed prominently — the others are hidden behind a tap. For more than two or three destinations, a single bio link page is both clearer for visitors and the only option you can measure properly.
Are links in Instagram captions clickable?
No. URLs written in captions render as plain text. The clickable placements are the profile link field, story link stickers and direct messages.
Does Instagram penalise link-in-bio tools?
There is no evidence of a ranking penalty for using a bio link page, and they are used at every follower count. What does hurt is sending people to a page that fails inside Instagram's in-app browser, because that shows up as people leaving.
Why do my Instagram links not open in Safari or Chrome?
Instagram opens links in its own in-app browser to keep users inside the app. Viewers can usually escape via the three-dot menu, but most will not think to. Detecting the context and offering the route out is the part you control.
